Grass Types

Turfgrasses fall into two categories: cool weather and warm weather. Cool seasoned grasses thrive in the Northern United States. Grasses that are categorized as cool seasoned are Kentucky Bluegrass, tall fescues, fine fescues, perennial ryegrass and bentgrasses. Cool season grasses grow rapidly during the cool spring months and then go dormant durning the hot summer. Proper watering can help a lawn stay green during the hot summers.

Warm-seasoned grasses grow best in the Southern United States because they can not thrive in cool temperatures. Grasses that fall into this category are St. Augustine grass, bermuda grass, zoysiagrass and bahiagrass. Warm-seasoned lawns turn brown or yellow during the fall or winter.  Knowing your surroundings will help you make an informative decision on which type of grass to plant to get that beautiful, lush, green lawn.
