Turfgrasses fall into two categories: cool weather and warm weather. Cool seasoned grasses thrive in the Northern United States. Grasses that are categorized as cool seasoned are Kentucky Bluegrass, tall fescues, fine fescues, perennial ryegrass and bentgrasses. Warm-seasoned grasses grow best in the Southern United States because they can not thrive in cool temperatures. Grasses that fall into this category are St. Augustine grass, bermuda grass, zoysiagrass and bahiagrass.
